Europe in uncharted waters: Energy crisis throws off switches, Draghi warns of far-right

Energy Sufficiency, Accuracy and Inflation Create an Explosive Scene on the Old Continent – Troubled by the Rise of the Far Right – Putin Keeps the Faucets Off and Waits Out Winter

Multiple risks, at the same time that Vladimir Putin has fully instrumentalized the energy crisis, are beginning to emerge for Europe. The energy crisis, on the one hand, endangers the sufficiency of European states in oil and natural gas in view of the coming winter and, on the other hand, creates an explosive scene at the level of societies, as the accuracy spreads to all EU member states, the at the same time that inflation is “gnawing away” at incomes, with the European Central Bank proceeding with successive interest rate increases, further burdening the budgets of households, businesses and states.

Already, one country after another, they are announcing energy saving measures. Famous monuments and public lighting are the first to be sacrificed on the altar of the battle for energy sufficiency, at the same time that Moscow keeps the taps turned off and moves to strengthen its relations and partnerships mainly with Asian big markets.

However, the energy-economic-social crisis are not the only dangers on the path that Europe has taken in the uncharted waters of the new order of things, which allegedly prevails over the previous one. Far-right parties and organizations have begun to make their presence felt, increasing their forces in powerful countries, such as France, Sweden, but also Italy, which is in a period of serious political instability.

Bell from Mario Draghi

Mario Draghi sent his personal message, a week before the September 25 election. As reported by DW, the Italian technocratic prime minister presented the new package of measures to support families and businesses totaling fourteen billion euros. The main interventions concern a tax refund for businesses, an extension of the reduction of state taxes on fuel and a “bonus” of 150 euros, which will be given to 22 million citizens.

At the same time, however, the Italian technocrat prime minister directly and indirectly referred to issues concerning the pre-election campaign. “Our country’s democracy is strong, it does not give in to foreign enemies and their paid dummies. We must have confidence in our democracy,” Draghi said.

According to analysts, his reference was to the League and Italy’s far-right Adelphia, the leading political force in the vote intention of all polls. The League – and in the recent past – has been accused of too close, friendly relations with Putin, while the far right still supports the well-known positions of Hungary and Poland.

Referring to Viktor Orbán and the European Parliament’s damning report, Mario Draghi added: “Our whole approach and ideas about Europe are concrete. Our allies are Germany and France, as well as the rest of the European countries fighting for the rule of law.”

Asked about the new Italian government that will emerge from the polls, he meaningfully added that “partners must be chosen not only on the basis of ideological affinity but the interests of Italians. In other words, answering the question “who are the partners that help me the most to protect these interests and who count the most?”

A Draghi with clear positions, who sent the message that there is no room for dangerous nationalisms and isolationism and once again ruled out that he might be interested in a second term as prime minister.
