Panel SA: BNDES bets on greater competition in the next sanitation auctions

by

The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), which works to set up new auctions for the concession of basic sanitation services, is betting that the decision of the Supreme Court that validated the sector’s new legal framework will increase competition between interested companies in investing in the area.

The six auctions coordinated by BNDES so far attracted the participation of 30 companies. The state of Amapá and the metropolitan region of Maceió (AL) received a greater number of interested parties than the three blocks of municipalities in Rio de Janeiro offered to the private sector this year.

The consortia that disputed the concession for the metropolitan region of Maceió brought together 15 companies. In Cariacica (ES), the auction had 15 participants as well. In Amapá, 13 companies submitted proposals. The blocks in Rio de Janeiro attracted between 5 and 9 companies.

Next year, the BNDES hopes to advance with projects for the concession of services in Porto Alegre (RS) and Ceará. The bank also supports the privatization of Corsan, the state sanitation company that Rio Grande do Sul has decided to put up for sale. The auction is scheduled for early 2023.
