Ministers are asking the Commission to submit a proposal to be discussed at the emergency Energy Council on 30 September, followed by a legislative proposal as soon as possible.
Fifteen EU countries are signing a letter to the European Commission, asking it to present a proposal for a ceiling on the wholesale price of natural gas, ahead of the emergency Energy Council to be held on September 30 in Brussels.
The letter, which was drawn up on the initiative of Greece, Italy, Belgium and Poland and which is available to APE-MPE, is addressed to the Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simpson, and is signed by the energy ministers of Belgium, Bulgaria, of Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Ministers are asking the Commission to submit a proposal to be discussed at the emergency Energy Council on 30 September, followed by a legislative proposal as soon as possible.
“The energy crisis that began last fall has worsened over time and is now causing unsustainable inflationary pressures that are hitting our households and businesses hard. We recognize the efforts made by the Commission and the measures it has proposed to deal with the crisis. But we have yet to tackle the most serious problem of all: the wholesale price of natural gas. The price ceiling that has been requested from the beginning by an ever-increasing number of Member States is the only measure that will help each Member State to moderate inflationary pressure, manage expectations and provide a framework in case of potential supply disruptions and to limit excess profits in the industry,” the energy ministers state in their letter, and then point out the following: “The cap should apply to all wholesale gas transactions and not be limited to imports from specific jurisdictions. It can be designed in such a way as to ensure security of supply and the free flow of gas within Europe, while achieving our common goal of reducing gas demand. This cap is a priority and can be complemented by proposals to strengthen financial supervision of the gas market and develop alternative benchmarks for gas pricing in Europe.”
