A growing number of countries have adopted local content requirements for developing solar and wind energy projects, according to a survey published this week by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, an influential American think tank.
In 2015, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) identified such policies in 21 countries. Since then, 13 more countries have adopted local content requirements, including Germany, Australia, the UK, Japan and Taiwan, the new survey says.
The investment package launched by Joe Biden in the United States this year provides for a 40% national content requirement for projects that apply for grants. In Brazil, the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) requires up to 50% for some items.
This year Germany established a policy to encourage the regional development of renewable energy sources. In the next auctions for the construction of wind energy parks, 15% of the volume of energy to be generated will be reserved for projects located in southern Germany.
