Chinese regulatory authorities have approved the first domestic model of commercial passenger airliner, local media reported, and Beijing hopes it will be able to compete with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320.
The C919, produced by state-owned company Comac (Commercial Aircraft Corp of China), was certified at Beijing airport in a ceremony on Thursday, according to media reports.
China has the world’s second-largest aviation market, and the country’s airlines have enthusiastically supported the launch of the C919, despite the plane having yet to receive the green light from US and EU regulatory authorities.
China Eastern Airlines, China’s second-largest airline, announced in May that it plans to add four C919s to its fleet.
According to Chinese media, the aircraft will be delivered to China Eastern Airlines between the end of this year and the first quarter of 2023.
Comac reported on its website that there are 815 planes of the model on order, by 28 airlines.
