Panel SA: Supermarkets ask presidential candidates to change product validity

by

Abras (Brazilian Association of Supermarkets) is campaigning for the concept of “Best Before”, a new label to adapt the expiration date of some products.

The idea, according to them, is to overturn the expiration date established in some foods and put a minimum period of duration of the product, if stored correctly.

Industry data indicate that 42% of non-perishable food discards in Brazilian retail are caused by the expiration date, and many of these foods could still be used and are in safe conditions for use, according to them.

A report by Abras points out that a 10% reduction in waste would represent savings of R$ 700 million per year.

The measure is part of a series of demands that the sector has brought to the presidential candidates.

Abras says that Best Before needs a broad debate with the regulatory system, such as Anvisa, the Ministry of Agriculture and Senacon (National Consumer Secretariat), in addition to a campaign for the consumer.

Foods such as pasteurized milk, in natura meats and short-term perishables would not be included in this policy.
