PT articulates meeting with toucan and cirist economists

The PT is expanding conversations with economists from other currents. The proposal is not only to gather suggestions, but also to seek the organization of a meeting with the presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

In addition to party names, the list being discussed internally includes Edmar Bacha, one of the fathers of the Real Plan, founding partner of the Casa das Garças institute in Rio de Janeiro, and Pedro Malan, Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s former finance minister.

Talks are already underway to obtain support from economists Nelson Marconi and Mauro Benevides, linked to the Ciro Gomes (PDT) campaign. Also on the radar are economists from Simone Tebet’s campaign (MDB), among them the program coordinator in this area, Elena Landau, in case an agreement with the emedebista can be closed.

Economist Arminio Fraga, former president of the BC (Central Bank) and columnist for Sheetconfirmed this Tuesday (4) that he was invited to participate in a meeting with PT members and said he accepted.

Meetings have already taken place with economists André Lara Rezende, who declared his vote for Lula in the first round, and Persio Arida, who, in 2018, coordinated the economic plan of then-presidential Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), now vice president of Lula’s ticket.

Bacha, Malan, Landau, Fraga, Arida and Lara Rezende were aligned with the PSDB, an acronym that historically polarized with the PT and with which the party is now negotiating support in the second round. Since the late 1990s, the two parties have attempted alliances, but rivalries and differences in agendas, especially in the economy, have precluded greater deals. In presidential disputes, the clashes were many and vigorous.

Bacha made macroeconomic contributions to the Tebet government program at the invitation of Landau. Sought after by the report, both said they would evaluate possible invitations to dialogue.

The proposals of the cirist Marconi and Benevides dialogue with part of the PT’s economic policy. Developmentalism and industrialization are examples.

This Tuesday (4), the president of the party announced unrestricted support for Lula. Minutes later Ciro released a video on the networks stating that he followed the party’s guidance.

Marconi told Sheetby WhatsApp message, which will also follow the guidance of the leaders of his party.

“I understand that this is the only option in the face of Bolsonar barbarism,” he said. “Although I disagree with several programmatic points and the practice adopted during the PT campaign, this is the only option at the moment for the country to proceed in a civilized way and not definitively lose itself as a nation.”

Marconi also stated that he expected programmatic coherence from the PT. “We will demand support for our proposals and I will be a critical observer in the future, always seeking the best for the country,” he said.

THE Sheet showed this Monday that, in the negotiation with the PDT, the PT will incorporate three proposals from Ciro Gomes: the program that foresees zero debts of the SPC, the minimum income plan and a full-time education project.

The PT’s national president, Gleisi Hoffmann, said that Arminio Fraga’s nod to the PT is “important”, as it shows “respect and consideration” and, above all, “comes within the scope of defending democracy”.

However, she said she did not know what the PT could give to the financial market, when she was questioned by journalists about the issue, after participating in the campaign act on Tuesday.

“I don’t see what gesture we could make in that sense. Both the market and the business sector know what Lula thinks,” he said.

“We have had conversations with the business community, with people from the market, talking about how we are thinking about doing things. There is no surprise in relation to what we think. Nor how we treat public finances with responsibility, nor about the program that we have for the social development of the country.”
