Georgiadis on SKAI: When does the “housewife’s basket” start and how will it work

by

“Mrs. Consumer and DIMEA will monitor the evolution of prices in the basket.” explained Adonis Georgiadis.

The implementation of the “housewife’s basket” measure will begin within October, and there will be no deadline for its completion as long as the crisis lasts, the Minister of Development pointed out to SKAI and Giorgos Autias Adonis Georgiades. “I’m trying to do it (start) in the next ten days,” he stressed.

Among others, the products in the basket include: rice, bread, pasta, beef, pork, lamb, goat, poultry, cured meats, frozen seafood, dairy, margarine and other vegetable fats, olive oil and other edible oils, frozen and fresh fruit and vegetables, sugar, chocolates, baby food, cocoa, tea and chamomile.

“I do not set prices, nor do I intervene in the type of product, but the consumer has the right to choose in each chain” explained Adonis Georgiadis.

“Mrs. Consumer and DIMEA will monitor the evolution of prices in the basket. Every two weeks there will be checks, while everyday we have electronic recording of retail prices in real time. If we see a price increase, the service will intervene, and fines will be imposed,” the minister promised.

The Minister of Development clarified that the ceiling on the profit margin is not going away, and in addition to the 50 products of the “basket”, the Ministry of Finance monitors the price of thousands of products. “3,900 checks have been carried out in the last six months. We imposed a 670,000 euro fine on a certain chain and collected it. The delinquency in the market has fallen from 25% to 6% (…) We put a lot of fines when we imposed the ceiling on the profit margin”.

“There is a world storm, and we try to keep Greece’s ship straight. To be precise, inflation, we have put a ceiling on the profit margin, we are trying to contain the storm but we are getting wet, and we are building a shed for the weakest to not get wet” explained the minister.
