As the officer’s body camera footage shows, he had rushed to the restaurant on an unrelated matter when he saw the 17-year-old in the car
A police officer in San Antonio, USA, fired unprovoked an unsuspecting teenager eating a burger in his car. The policeman was dismissed from the force.
James Brenand shot and killed Eric Cantu, 17, on Oct. 2 in a fast-food restaurant parking lot, police training director Alyssa Campos said.
As the officer’s body camera footage shows, he had rushed to the restaurant on an unrelated matter when he saw Cantu in the car, which he had chased a day earlier without success, Campos said.
A Texas prosecutor said in a statement Friday that he does not have enough evidence to file charges against the teenager.
Brennan, who has been on the force for less than a year, violated training and police procedures after approaching the car, Campos said.
“The officer jerked open the driver’s door and ordered the driver out of the car” before the backup Brennan had requested arrived, Campos said. Next, Brendan opened fire several times, while the door of the IX closed, and Cantu drove away.
The teenager, who was struck by the gunfire, stopped nearby, where he and a passenger, who was not injured, were found by police.
Cantu is hospitalized in stable condition and was initially charged with fleeing and assaulting a police officer.
