Lula criticizes reduction of the richest in income tax and promises changes

Presidential candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has again promised income tax exemption for people earning up to R$5,000, said he will carry out a progressive tax reform and criticized the tax abatement granted to wealthy people.

The PT said that “it is not normal” for a person who earns six minimum wages to be considered rich and to be among the richest 10% in the country. And he highlighted that 68% of income tax collection comes from people who earn little.

“Now, those who make a profit, those who have dividends, do not pay. Those who are rich still deduct the health plan they pay and those who end up paying are the poor who do not have health insurance. So, we are going to change this story,” he said.

The statements were made this Wednesday (12) in Salvador, where Lula participated in an election.

In a statement to the press, the former president promised to carry out a tax reform that benefits the poorest.

“There are many people earning little, and very few earning a lot. There has to be an investment. We are going to have to make a correct tax policy. It is not possible for a worker who is going to buy a kilo of beans to pay the same tax that the president pays of Santander”, he said.

Later, in a speech on top of an electric trio at Farol da Barra, the former president also spoke about hunger, especially among children.

“How many children go to sleep without being able to have a glass of milk? This is not normal. This is not lack of money, it is lack of shame on the face of the Brazilian elite,” he said.

He also stated that, despite the scenario of economic recovery shown by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in his radio and television campaign, millions of children must spend Children’s Day “without a single memory because the father and mother cannot give it” .

“I always say people don’t want too much. People want enough to live decently,” he said.

In a carnival atmosphere, Lula traveled a stretch of about 2.5 kilometers between Morro do Gato and Farol da Barra on top of a van. Organizers estimate that at least 100,000 people attended the event.
