Moraes will discuss electoral harassment by companies with the Public Ministry

by

The president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), Alexandre de Moraes, said this Thursday (13) that he will discuss measures to combat electoral harassment in a meeting with the Public Ministry.

“We regret in the 21st century that we return to a criminal practice, employer coercing, threatening, promising benefits for their employees to vote or not vote for a certain person,” the minister said during a court session.

Moraes did not confirm when the meeting will take place. He said he should meet with representatives of the Electoral Public Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office.

The union centrals and the MPT (Public Ministry of Labor) have registered complaints of electoral harassment.

CUT recently took to the Public Ministry and Electoral Justice an audio in which the mayor of Cupira (PE), José Maria de Macedo (União Brasil), threatens to cut works in the city if Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wins the election for President of the Republic.

Moraes said that military police commanders in the states and the Federal District also reported this type of harassment.

The STF minister also stated that this type of harassment by employers is a common and electoral crime, and informed that the Electoral Justice has a specific channel for receiving complaints.

The minister did not announce what new measures should be taken to combat the problem.

The MPT has received at least 197 complaints of electoral harassment in 23 states and the Federal District since the beginning of this year’s campaign, according to a balance sheet updated on Tuesday (11).

The South region leads the national ranking with more than half of the cases across the country. According to the MPT, the number of complaints in Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and Santa Catarina has reached 103, which corresponds to 52% of the total.

One of the most repercussions in Rio Grande do Sul was that of the agricultural implements company Stara, which issued a statement on the 3rd threatening to cut its business if former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) wins the elections. The case was revealed by the Panel SA column. The company later stated that the letter only points to a revision of the projections.
