The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), will read this Tuesday (25) the request that asks for the creation of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate cases of electoral harassment allegedly carried out by businessmen and public managers in favor of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The author of the request, Senator Alexandre Silveira (PSD-MG), managed to collect the minimum of 27 signatures necessary to open the CPI – so far, there are 28, collected with the help of minority leaders, Jean Paul Prates (PT-RN). ), and from the Opposition, Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP).
Despite reading the document, the installation should only take place after the second round of elections, on October 30, according to an agreement made with party leaders.
In the document, Silveira asks for 90 days for the complaints to be investigated by the members of the collegiate. In the justification of the request, the senator cites complaints of threats to workers in which there is a requirement or inducement to vote for Bolsonaro. “The practice is criminal and attacks the voters’ right to choose, in yet another hateful aggression against democracy in the midst of the electoral process”, argues the senator. “We need to contain these outbursts against democracy.”
Until Friday (21), the MPT (Ministry of Labor) had received 1,112 complaints of electoral harassment in the country, an increase of 424% compared to the 2018 elections, when there were 212.
Silveira recalls that it is a crime for public servants to use their authority to try to coerce someone to vote for a candidate, and that the use of violence for this is also punishable by the Electoral Code.
“The Public Ministry of Labor and the Electoral Justice have been involved in the investigation of these crimes. However, the joint effort of all the control bodies of Brazilian society will be of great value to investigate the fundamental issue”, defends Silveira.
“The installation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry is urgent to investigate such crimes. This is something that is very serious and it would not be acceptable for the Senate to omit itself in the effort to carry out a thorough investigation of the facts.”
The electoral harassment CPI is a counterpoint to the electoral research CPI filed by government officials in the Chamber of Deputies and sponsored by the president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). In the Senate, allies of Jair Bolsonaro collected enough signatures to install the CPI, but Pacheco did not read the request.
Alexandre Silveira ran for re-election to the Senate, but was defeated by Bolsonarista Cleitinho (PSC). Rodrigo Pacheco’s ally became a key player in the second round of the presidential elections, working to maintain the advantage in Minas Gerais of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
