BNDES will pay BRL 45 billion to the Treasury by November and will settle liabilities in 2023

by

BNDES will pay R$ 45 billion to the National Treasury until November 30, according to a schedule for returning liabilities agreed between the development bank and the Ministry of Economy, released this Tuesday (25).

The amount corresponds to about 65% of the total still owed by BNDES, informed the government. The remaining R$ 24 billion must be paid by November 2023. The resources are related to loans made in previous governments by the Union to capitalize the development bank.

The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, had been accusing the BNDES’ legal area of creating obstacles to payments to the Union. In September, he stated that the bank would still have a liability of R$90 billion with the Treasury, and that the payment would make it possible to reduce the debt/GDP ratio this year to around 76%.

The new schedule was agreed after the TCU (Union Court of Auditors) determined the acceleration of payments, which were still below Guedes’ forecast.

In a note, the Ministry of Economy and BNDES said that the understanding, approved by the bank’s board of directors, maintains the possibility of early payments whenever cash is available, without compromising the BNDES’ liquidity indicators.
