A fine of 5,000 euros for each day that the debtors are late in sending the list
The amendment for the household basket, with a period of validity until 31 March 2023, filed on Wednesday morning by the Ministry of Development and Investments.
According to the amendment, those obliged to participate in the household basket are “food and other product hypermarkets that carry out retail sales activities (super markets) whose total annual turnover exceeds 90,000,000 euros per year, based on the financial statements immediately preceding, from entry into force of this administrative period.
The list will include consumer products “which are necessary for decent living”
“In particular, those subject to paragraph 1 shall include at least one (1) product from each product category that is included in the household basket and have them available at an affordable price, especially compared to other products of the same category, informing consumers, who come to physical or physical stores them, in terms of the composition of the “household basket” they propose. This information is provided by any appropriate means, in particular lists, brochures and special markings on the products or their sales area” the amendment clarifies.
The amendment also emphasizes that the list of products participating in the “household basket” and their prices are set freely by businesses, in compliance with Article 58 of Law 4818/2021 (A’ 124), on unfair profiteering.
The products that are included in the “household basket” are checked, as a matter of priority, by the competent control authorities and can be varied each time the list is sent by the debtors to the Ministry of Development and Investments.
The Ministry of Development also makes it possible with the amendment to the “household basket” to include businesses that are not included in the basic debtors. “The above-mentioned companies, if they send a list of products, are obliged to comply with this until it expires, and are checked, as a matter of priority.”
The amendment also provides that non-sending of a product catalog or incomplete sending of a product catalog by the debtors is punishable by an administrative fine of 5,000 euros for each day of delay in sending the complete catalog.
“It will have a very good result, I am extremely optimistic”said on Monday the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis speaking about the “household basket” today, in the First Program.
“Its success or failure cannot be hidden, it will be judged on the shelf” he added and added that the amendment is expected to be voted on this week and if approved by the Competition Commission the process will start next week, in supermarkets.
In relation to whether other sectors will join the same initiative, Mr. Georgiadis emphasized that the ministry invites every sector to participate. “Making it mandatory for the chains above 95 million does not mean that it is prohibited for anyone else who is below 95 million. We encourage everyone to make a basket” he said characteristically.
