Hiring of temporary workers at Christmas will be the highest in nine years, predicts CNC

by

Brazilian retail should hire 109,400 temporary workers due to Christmas sales in 2022, projected this Wednesday (26) the CNC (National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism).

If the number is confirmed, it will be the highest level in nine years, or since 2013. At the time, the number of temporary hires had reached 115,500.

The 2022 estimate is anchored in a forecast of a 2.1% increase in Christmas sales, after two years of decline (-2.7% in 2020 and -2.1% in 2021).

According to economist Fabio Bentes, from CNC, the return of consumer circulation in stores tends to stimulate business after the restrictions in the pandemic.

Signs of a labor market reaction and the recent lull in inflation should also help, although interest rates are high in the country, says Bentes.

“This tends to favor the increase in sales in certain segments. This year, hypermarkets and supermarkets and clothing, more than ever, will pull the growth of retail sales after two years of decline”, he says.

“Of course, this will not make sales explode, even because the consumption conditions at the moment are not yet the most favorable”, he ponders.

In 2021, retail hired 97,000 temporary workers for Christmas, according to CNC. On that occasion, the omicron variant of the coronavirus represented one of the obstacles to the expansion of sales.

If the 2022 projection is confirmed (109,400), the number of temporary vacancies will grow by almost 13% compared to last year.

“Two months before Christmas 2020 and 2021, retail consumer circulation was still, respectively, 22.1% and 4.8% below the pre-pandemic level,” says CNC.

“Currently, the flow of consumers in stores is 3.1% above the period immediately prior to the beginning of the health crisis”, amendment.

The entity’s forecasts are based on seasonal aspects of admissions and dismissals in the retail trade, registered in the federal government’s Caged (General Registry of Employed and Unemployed).

According to CNC, the largest volumes of hiring should be concentrated in the branches of hypermarkets and supermarkets (45.53 thousand) and clothing (25.88 thousand).

The first segment is the largest retail employer and usually stands out for the absolute number of vacancies offered. Meanwhile, clothing, accessories and footwear stores are historically the most impacted by the Christmas period.

CNC projects the rate of hiring temporary workers of 11% after Christmas 2022. The percentage is lower than last year, when retail hired 15% of those hired.

“After Christmas 2021, retail was still replacing the vacancies that had been closed in the first two waves of the pandemic, so that a good part of those hired after the main retail date were related to the recomposition of the sector’s staff”, he says. the entity.

“In addition, unlike 2021, the outlook for economic growth for the following year is lower at the end of 2022 than it was a year ago”, he adds.
