14% reduction in domestic gas consumption, 294% jump in exports and record performance for the Revythoussa Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Stationwhich was the main entry gate for natural gas in the country covering Bulgaria’s needs as well, emerge from DESFA’s data on natural gas consumption during the nine months of 2022.
Specifically, according to the relevant data of DESFA for the period January – September 2022, total natural gas demand (domestic consumption and exports) increased by 13.47%, reaching 65.39 Terawatt hours (TWh) from 57.63 TWh, compared to the same period last year . A decrease of 14.25% was noted in domestic consumption from 52.46 TWh to 44.98 TWh, while the increase of natural gas exports by 294.73%, from 5.17 TWh to 20.41 TWh, was notable.
The largest quantities entered the country from the Revythoussa Terminal, which covered 42.62% of imports, registering an increase that is a historical record. In particular, approximately 27.85 TWh of LNG were unloaded by 60 tankers from 6 countries, compared to approximately 18.14 TWh by 25 tankers in the corresponding period of the previous year. The increase mainly concerns LNG cargoes from the USA, which reached 18.67 TWh, compared to 8.04 TWh in the same period last year, with the USA remaining the largest importer of LNG in our country with a percentage of 67.05%. In second place were imports from Algeria (3.95 TWh), followed by Nigeria (2.07 TWh), Egypt (2 TWh) and Oman (1.03 TWh), with Indonesia (0.11 TWh) to be in the last position.
Regarding the contribution of the remaining entry points, the Sidirokastro entry point (from where Gazprom’s gas is imported) covered 35.7% of imports (23.34 TWh), followed by the Nea Mesimvria entry point, which is connected to the TAP pipeline, covering 19.16% of imports (12.53 TWh), with the quantities imported through this point increased by 27.54% compared to the same period in 2021. Finally, the Gardens Evros (imports from Turkey) covered 2.5% of imports (1.64 TWh).
In terms of natural gas consumer categories, power producers continue to record the highest consumption, covering 73.7% of domestic consumption with 33.15 TWh out of a total of 44.98 TWh consumed, an amount 6.24% lower than same period last year. Increased by 5.46% compared to the first nine months of 2021 is also the consumption recorded by households and businesses through the distribution networks, with 9.58 TWh, corresponding to almost 21.30% of demand. Consumption by domestic industries and CNG in the first nine months of 2022 reached 2.24 TWh, registering a decrease of 71.96% compared to the first nine months of 2021 and covering 4.99% of demand.
