Panel SA: Government discards quarantine for former parliamentarian to act as a lobbyist

by

By proposing new rules for the work of lobbyists in the country, the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government abandoned the idea of a quarantine for former parliamentarians who want to defend private interests after leaving office, considered in the first versions of the bill submitted to Congress in Friday (10).

Current legislation imposes a six-month quarantine for former occupants of public positions who wish to exercise private activities after leaving office. Version of the bill discussed by the government last year extended the obligation to other agents, including members of the Legislative and Judiciary.

The bill presented to the Chamber of Deputies imposes on public agents of all Powers the obligation to disclose information about their meetings with representatives of the private sector, identifying the participants in the meetings, the companies they represent and the matters dealt with.

Bolsonaro also signed a decree that imposes these obligations on those in decision-making positions in the Executive. The new rules will only come into effect on October 9, 2022, as the government has yet to develop a new system for publishing authorities’ agendas on the internet.
