Two children are among those affected after a driver ran over a group of protesters who were participating in an undemocratic blockade on the Washington Luís highway, in Mirassol (SP).

According to the city hall, the hit-and-run occurred around 4 pm this Wednesday (2), and the car advanced on people who were in the middle of the lane.

Two girls, aged 11 and 12, were admitted to the local UPA (Emergency Care Unit). In addition to them, four men, aged between 36 and 54, and a woman, aged 26, were also admitted.

According to the city hall, two of the adults (one man and one woman) were referred to the Hospital de Base de Rio Preto, one of the children was discharged and the other remains under observation at the health unit.

The driver, whose car was vandalized by protesters, was arrested and taken to the police station.

According to the Public Security Department, the Military Highway Police arrested the 28-year-old driver.

“The man was driving his vehicle through the place, but, when trying to be prevented from following by a group of people, he accelerated the car. Two military road police officers, along with other people, were run over.”

According to the SSP, he was approached by the PMs and arrested in the act, being sent to the Mirassol Police Station, where the police report was registered. “Forensics were requested at the scene and the case was registered as an attempted murder,” the note adds.

The presence of children in the coup acts that spread across Brazil after Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) defeated Jair Bolsonaro (PL) last Sunday (30) is not exclusive to the act in Mirassol.

In the late afternoon of Tuesday (1st), children going to a protest on Castelo Branco highway, in Barueri (SP), made the Military Highway Police of São Paulo change its strategy. To avoid confrontation and possible victims, the agents decided to try to free other points of the road first.

In the assessment of childhood and youth specialists consulted by the Sheetexposing children to this type of situation, where there is a risk of violence, can lead to the loss of family power, in extreme cases, and even serve as an argument in a custody dispute.

The anti-democratic acts in the country’s roads still cause inconvenience, but they have lost strength, and the number of states with coup blockades has fallen on this third day of protests – there were 14 on Wednesday night.

The PRF has already applied almost 2,000 fines to drivers who are blocking the highways, in an amount that already exceeds R$ 18 million.
