The Spanish newspaper El País announced this Tuesday (14) the end of its operations in Brazil. Launched in 2013, the Brazilian version of the vehicle failed to achieve economic sustainability in these eight years of operation, “despite having reached large audiences and a considerable number of digital subscribers,” it said in a statement on its website. The local team of 17 journalists was taken by surprise by the announcement.
“El País, which has correspondents in São Paulo, has the most extensive network of journalists on the continent. From its offices in Mexico City, offices in Washington, Bogotá and Buenos Aires, and its journalists in the main capitals, the edition of EL PAÍS América offers the most complete coverage in Spanish in the area. An effort that will be expanded in the coming months and on which the newspaper will focus its energies,” the company said in a statement.
El País is one of the most prestigious newspapers in the world. In Brazil, it had award-winning columnists, such as Eliane Brum and Xico Sá, as well as important references in literature, such as writer Mario Vargas Llosa.
In October 2020, the content, which was free, became exclusive to subscribers.
“We want to thank the professionals at El País Brasil for their great effort and dedication. As well as the loyalty of our readers, who will be able to follow information about the region and the rest of the world in our edition of America. For this newspaper, Brazil is an axis of global information both on the political and economic level, as well as on the cultural and social level,” he informed.
Founded in 1976 in Spain, the newspaper took a stand in defense of democracy from the beginning, amid the end of Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in the country. It is controlled by the Prisa group. It circulates in tabloid format in Spain and, according to the most recent data, has a circulation of 457 thousand copies. The group is undergoing changes in ownership and is facing economic difficulties.
In a note, the newspaper’s team took a stand on the closure:
“El País Brasil’s team was informed today, as were you, of the closing of the edition’s activities after eight years. We were born from the winds of 2013, when thousands of readers sought in Spain a vision of the biggest protests in history. to have recounted in depth the crisis that followed, trying to make each title reflect a country that was crumbling. We mapped the interests in the impeachment. We scrutinized all sides of the Car Wash. We brought crimes against human rights, racism, rapes to the headlines. and the threat to democracy.
We built this journal with you. And, therefore, we make a point of personally thanking you for your support and your vote of confidence.
Thank you for helping us do the journalism that calls things by their name.
A hug and see you soon”.
