The unemployment rate fell in six states in the third quarter, compared to the immediately previous three months, informed this Thursday (17) the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

The reductions were registered by Rondônia (from 5.8% to 3.9%), Ceará (from 10.4% to 8.6%), Acre (from 11.9% to 10.1%), Maranhão (from 10.8% to 9.7%), Minas Gerais (from 7.2% to 6.3%) and Paraná (from 6.1% to 5.3%).

In the other states of the federation, the unemployment rate showed relative stability in statistical terms, according to the IBGE.

The data are part of the Continuous PNAD (Continuous National Household Sample Survey). The survey portrays both the formal and informal labor market. That is, it ranges from jobs with a formal contract and CNPJ to the popular odd jobs.

The highest unemployment rates were registered in Bahia (15.1%), Pernambuco (13.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (12.3%). The smallest ones were in Mato Grosso (3.8%), Santa Catarina (3.8%) and Rondônia (3.9%).

In Brazil, the unemployment rate fell to 8.7% in the third quarter. It is the lowest level since the second quarter of 2015 (8.4%).

The number of unemployed in the country fell to 9.5 million. It is the lowest level since December 2015 (9.2 million).

According to official statistics, the unemployed population is made up of people aged 14 or over who are out of work and are looking for new jobs. Those who do not have a job and are not looking for opportunities do not enter into this calculation.

“In the second quarter, the occupancy rate had fallen by 1.8 percentage points, with the drop spreading across 22 states. , by state”, said the IBGE work and income coordinator, Adriana Beringuy.

After the damage caused by the pandemic, the job market benefited from vaccination against Covid-19. The immunization process allowed for the reopening of businesses and the return of movement of people.

On the eve of the elections, the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government also sought to heat up the economy with the release of resources, tax cuts and the expansion of the Auxílio Brasil program. Bolsonaro was defeated in the election by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

The drop in unemployment, as of last year, was accompanied by the creation of jobs with lower average wages. Income was weakened in a context of high inflation, and only recently began to show signs of improvement.

Economists see a chance that the unemployment rate will be closer to 8% by December in Brazil. The final stretch of the year is usually marked by temporary hiring due to seasonal demand in sectors such as commerce.

Brazilian retailers are expected to hire 109,400 temporary workers for Christmas 2022, according to a projection by the CNC (National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism). If the forecast is confirmed, it will be the highest number in nine years – or since 2013.

In 2023, the recovery of the labor market tends to lose momentum, economists signal. The effect of high interest rates weighs heavily on this assessment, which challenges companies’ productive investments and household consumption.
