Transition members defend suspending privatizations and reviewing sanitation standards

by

Members of the transition team of the elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), criticized this Thursday (17) privatization processes in the area of transport and said they will recommend the revision of norms involving the legal framework of sanitation , which paved the way for greater participation of private companies in the sector.

The first to address the issue was the former governor of São Paulo Márcio França (PSB), who is part of the technical group that will coordinate issues related to cities in the transition of the federal government.

He was questioned about the privatization process of the Companhia Brasileira de Trens Urbanos in Minas Gerais (CBTU-MG), whose notice was published at the end of September. “They are trying to run with things. There are several privatization things: Minas Gerais, the subway; Santos (SP), the port. .”

The former governor of São Paulo defended suspending processes that are definitive. “Imagine, you privatize a situation that will have to be ratified by the next government, which does not agree with the format. Then it creates insecurity, an eventual compensation”, he said.

“I suggest that [para] things that are definitive for many years, the current government may have, the ministers themselves, in short, make a suspension… because otherwise you generate insecurity”, he said.

“We rely on the common sense of those who are organizing it and the common sense of those who will eventually acquire it. Because the person is acquiring it, but the homologation will stay ahead”, he added. “If it is badly done, if it is contested [pode não ser homologada]🇧🇷

Later, elected federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP) said that the technical group will receive a commission of CBTU workers next week. “The proposal is that next week we talk with social movements, with entities, the FNP itself [Frente Nacional de Prefeitos]representatives of mayors, representatives of various sectors related to the area of cities”, he said.

“Now, it is very reckless, at the end of a government’s lights, with a new government already elected, with a transition underway, for you to make a decision like this to privatize CBTU”, he added. “From my point of view, it’s better to suspend [a privatização]”, he said, emphasizing not to speak on behalf of the political coordination of the government.

Boulos also spoke about the legal framework for sanitation, sanctioned by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2020. He pointed out that the transition team does not have the prerogative to propose a legal review, but can recommend an infralegal review of decrees and ordinances. “It will be done.”

“The position of most of the parties that support President Lula’s own coalition in Congress when it went to vote on the milestone is that the sanitation privatization process is very harmful,” he said.

“It is harmful for you to have a regulatory agency like the ANA [Agência Nacional das Águas] with super powers and without society’s control”, he defended, adding that the debate will be held with technicians next week.
