Gasoline price rises for sixth straight week, says ANP

by

The price of gasoline at Brazilian service stations rose for the sixth consecutive week, according to a survey by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels). Last week, the product was sold, on average, at R$ 5.05 per liter.

It is a high of 0.6% over the value seen in the previous week. Since the beginning of the sequence of hikes, shortly before the second round of elections, the average price of gasoline in the country rose 5.4%, or R$ 0.26 per liter.

The rise in prices reflects an increase in the prices of anhydrous ethanol, which is mixed with gasoline sold at gas stations. Since the beginning of September, Petrobras has not changed the sale prices of its refineries, which had been constantly reduced during the election campaign.

The state-owned company spent weeks operating with lags in relation to international prices, but the signs were reversed at the opening of the market this Monday, in view of the fall in international oil prices in recent days.

According to Abicom (Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers), the average price of gasoline in Brazilian refineries is 3% above the international parity, or R$ 0.08 per liter.

Also impacted by prices at mills, the average price of hydrous ethanol has become more expensive at the pumps: last week, the average price of the product rose 1.3%, to R$ 3.84 per liter. It was the seventh consecutive week of increases.

The price of diesel fell by 0.3%, according to the ANP survey. Last week, a liter of fuel was sold in the country, on average, at R$ 6.57.

With no changes at refineries since mid-September, the average price of diesel at Brazilian refineries is 6%, or R$0.28 per liter, below import parity, according to Abicom.

The price of cooking gas has not yet brought much reflection of the 5.3% cut promoted by Petrobras in its refineries last week. According to the ANP, the 13-kilogram cylinder was sold in the country, on average, at R$ 110.19 last week, a figure just 0.2% lower than that seen in the previous week.

The less intense drop in fuel prices led the IPCA (Ample National Consumer Price Index) to rise again in October, after three months of decline. Driven by food, the country’s official inflation indicator rose by 0.59% last month.
