In a month when the World Cup and the start of the end-of-year shopping season coincide, shopkeepers in shopping centers on the outskirts of São Paulo are betting on Black Friday to clear stocks and make way for Christmas and New Year sales. -Young.

On Avenida Comendador Sant’Anna, a well-known commercial spot in Capão Redondo, in the south zone, the offer posters have been on display since the beginning of November. “Our Black Friday has already started,” says Laiane Santos Silva, 22, who works as a manager at a shoe store.

She says that the trade has 80% of products on sale, but that customers tend to appear in greater numbers only at the end of the month, when the first installment of the 13th salary falls. That’s when the “warm up for Christmas” begins. “We clear our inventory of tips and the new parts remain [para dezembro]”, he states.

A few meters away, the 1DASUL store, created by the writer Ferréz and which works with clothes, accessories and books, bets on posts and lives on Instagram to increase sales.

The brand adopted the expression “Black November” instead of Black Friday and has been offering up to 60% off items such as blouses and hats.

Originally created in the United States, Black Friday takes place annually on the fourth Friday of November.

In Brazil, many stores choose to extend the discounts throughout the month of November. This year, the date should move BRL 4.2 billion, according to the projection of the CNC (National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism), which expects the best financial result since its incorporation into the national retail calendar, in 2010.

The estimate is that the Cup in the same month should increase sales. “This is a very important moment for the trade of goods and services and, with the increase in promotions of items aimed at the Football World Cup, the segment should end the year well”, said CNC president José Roberto Tadros, in note.

For seller Davi Aplik, 35, however, expectations about sales are one thing and reality is another. With the increase in inflation, he claims that many families from the periphery will reduce spending. 🇧🇷[Nesse momento] either the person buys a T-shirt for R$40, R$50, or goes to the fair”, comments the seller.

In October, prices of foods such as onions and fruits increased by 9.31% and 3.56% respectively, according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). In the period of 12 months, the basic basket still accumulates double-digit inflation.

For salesperson Carla Pereira, 28, at the clothing store Outlet Store, in São Miguel Paulista, east of São Paulo, Black Friday sales are lukewarm compared to 2021.

“Last year was much better”, says the saleswoman, who noticed an advance just in the sale of Selection T-shirts.

On the other hand, a trader at the Grupo Arabi furniture store, on Marechal Tito, also in São Miguel Paulista, reports that the establishment has been selling well, especially in this month of November.

“It has already improved compared to the last few months”, says Alexandre Holanda, 36. “This year we expect to have a little more than last year, because of the restrictions [da Covid]which are a little lower now.”

At the end of 2021, the period was the first with open trades and fewer restrictions.

According to Holanda, as the World Cup usually encourages the gathering of families and friends at home, there is an expectation of an increase in demand for items such as new sofas.

“In the first fortnight [de novembro] we have already sold more sofas than two months ago, so we believe that [a Copa] help too.”

Also at Marechal Tito, Varejão Teruya expects to expand its sales with the arrival of the first installment of the 13th salary, which has to be paid by companies until November 30th.

According to salesman Guilherme Viana, 33, the construction materials store has been promoting promotions since the beginning of the month and is already observing more intense movement in the region.

🇧🇷[As perspectivas] are tall. We are waiting for the issue of the 13th as well and this increase in consumption at the end of the year, and we have good expectations.”

On the other side of the city, in Grajaú, merchants on Avenida Dona Belmira Marin say that the prolonged holiday of the Proclamation of the Republic has hindered sales, but they hope that next week will be better.

Manager of a unit of Lojas Paulistanas, Maria de Fátima Macal, 37, says that the brand has invested in offer combos, like two sneakers for the price of one.

“Downloaded [o preço] a lot”, explains the manager, who has taken advantage of the Black Friday period to train temporary teams for Christmas.

According to CNC, Black Friday is already the fifth most important date for commerce in Brazil. Some merchants, however, point out that the event has not yet entered the calendar of all Brazilian consumers.

Vando Ribeiro, 33, works as a manager at a handbag and backpack store on Avenida Dona Belmira Marin and says that e-commerce benefits more from Black Friday than street stores.

“I think people give more preference to the online store”, he says, explaining that even so the store has been promoting some items. “We expect it to increase a lot [as vendas]🇧🇷
