The negotiation on the energy issue – At least six more countries support the ceiling on the price of natural gas to be established below 200 euros

An intense confrontation over the ceiling on the price of natural gas is expected at tomorrow’s extraordinary Energy Council in Brussels, in which the Greek side comes determined to press and create alliances for a ceiling below 200 euros/Mwh.

“At tomorrow’s Energy Council we are going to confirm that there is a majority capable of setting a ceiling below 200 euros on the price of natural gas and not at the absurd levels proposed by the European Commission”, said today, the Minister of Energy, Kostas Skrekas from Brussels.

“Greece’s aim is to adopt both regulations together (solidarity regulation and price correction regulation) and we will try to create the necessary alliances”, stressed the Greek Minister, who described as “unsatisfactory” the Commission’s proposal for a “mechanism correction” at 275 euros/Mwh.

“The limit proposed by the Commission does not ensure that natural gas prices will be reduced, so it does not achieve its goal of reducing prices”, stressed K. Skrekas, noting that Greece supports a ceiling between 150-200 euros .

According to European diplomatic sources, in addition to Greece, at least six more countries (Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria) support the ceiling on the price of natural gas to be established below 200 euros. Negotiations on the energy issue continue today at the level of EU Permanent Representatives.
