Panel SA: Use of plastics in Amazon’s packaging increases and threatens oceans, says NGO

by

A report released on Wednesday (15) by Oceana, a non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting the oceans, points to a significant increase in the use of plastic packaging by Amazon in 2020.

According to the study, the company put 270,000 tonnes of plastic into circulation with its products last year, including air cushions, bubble wrap and plastic-coated paper envelopes.

The increase estimated by the organization was 29% compared to 2019. Oceana estimates that 10,700 tons of discarded packaging may have reached waterways and seas around the world.

It would be as if a delivery van filled with plastic packaging waste were tossed into the sea every 67 minutes throughout the year, according to the organization’s report.

In a statement, Amazon disputed the study’s data, saying they overestimated the company’s use of plastics by more than 300%, and said it had been making efforts to reduce the use of plastics.
