“That’s something we’re certainly watching,” White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said when asked about Twitter’s evolution into a disinformation vehicle.
The White House announced Monday that it is monitoring social media platform Twitter under its new executive director. Elon Musk for the possibility of misinformation.
“That’s something we’re certainly watching,” White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said when asked about Twitter’s evolution into a disinformation vehicle.
Jean-Pierre said social media platforms have a responsibility “to ensure when it comes to misinformation, when it comes to the hate that we see, that… they take action and that they will continue to take action”.
Musk, who has reinstated a number of previously disabled Twitter accounts, said last weekend the number of new user sign-ups “was at an all-time high.” However, there has been a mass exodus of advertisers over concerns about data verification and hate speech that Musk attributes to activist groups lobbying companies that advertise on Twitter.
“We’re all watching this closely,” Jean-Pierre told reporters at the White House. “Social media companies have a responsibility to prevent their platforms from being used by users who seek to cause violence, especially violence that targets specific communities”.
“This is a battle for the future of civilization. If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead,” the tycoon tweeted, without naming the White House.
