The 500 million euros touched the support measures taken by the government for the primary sector in order to ensure food sufficiency, as emphasized by the Minister of Rural Development and Food Giorgos Georgantas, in his speech at the 6th forum of the Economist, for South-Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean.
“Greece was asked to take measures to ensure both the sufficiency of goods and the continuation of the Greek production of goods”, said Mr. Georgantas in this regard and added that “in such unorthodox situations, national consensus and collective response is required and not the isolation of common good for party or personal gain.
It is necessary to promote the common, collective – and ultimately national – interest, over the sectoral or corporate or even personal interest”.
At the same time, the competent minister spoke about institutional measures aimed at food sufficiency, such as the inclusion of soft wheat and corn in the linked aids, but also the maintenance of aids in pulses, livestock and hay crops.
He underlined that it is possible to cultivate in lands included in the set-aside program without loss of subsidies, while the stocks of all catering businesses in the food sector are recorded, with the aim of avoiding profiteering.
Speaking about our country’s strategic plan for the new CAP, Mr. Georgantas underlined that the successful implementation “constitutes the most important challenge for the dynamic transformation of the primary sector of our country, especially in the midst of the successive, exogenous crises we are experiencing” .
“Our goal,” he said, “is the strengthening of agricultural production, sustainable development and the support of the Greek economy. With consistency, efficiency and speed we are transforming the primary sector, giving impetus to the economic development of the country”.
