The Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras publicly requested through SKAI from the systemic banks to actively contribute to the support of the citizens – The proposal of the banks under preparation
The proposal of the banks that will concern the support for informed vulnerable borrowers, taking into account the European supervisory rules, without budgetary costs, after the meeting held with the Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras.
Christos Staikouras publicly requested through SKAI from the systemic banks to actively contribute to the support of citizens whose incomes are under pressure, due to high inflation and the increase in the cost of money due to the contractionary monetary policy.
Mr. Staikouras invited the banks in a reasonable period of time and within the next two weeks at the latest, to submit specific proposals for a series of issues that have to do with the acceleration of the arrangements, through the out-of-court settlement, the support of the informed borrowers, the increase in deposit rates and the review of banking charges.
The proposal of the banks under construction
According to information, the proposal of the banks under preparation, concerns the 50% subsidy of the increase, with which the monthly installment of mortgage loans of vulnerable borrowers has been burdened with the start of the upward cycle of interest rates, specifically from the summer of 2022 and it is estimated that it can start from the beginning of 2023.
It will concern informed loans, according to convergent estimates of 20,000-25,000 borrowers, who are in the economically vulnerable category and there will be income and property criteria. The duration of the subsidy will be 12 months and the banks will also take into account the positions of the competent European supervisory authorities.
According to information, the role of the European supervisory authorities is not about approving the banks’ proposal, but is focused on calculating the additional funds that the banks will need to implement it, as with any other proposal that is submitted. The competent European authorities are informed as part of the regular communication that exists between the two sides. The proposal will start to be implemented from the beginning of the year, according to all information.
Last week’s meeting between the finance minister and the banks also discussed, as announced, the submission of proposals by the banks with the aim of increasing the approvability of the requests of the extrajudicial mechanism concerning their informed borrowers. The relevant proposals are expected to be submitted by the end of the year.
The issue was also considered the increase in interest rates deposits and reducing the increased lending rates as a result of the ECB interest rate hike. Credit institutions are expected to move, separately and independently, in this direction in the near future. Mr. Staikouras requested on Saturday that this be done immediately, taking into account the large increase in the banks’ interest margin recently. Also discussed was the issue of the re-evaluation of bank commission costs in simple banking transactions. The government presented a list of relevant provisions, which will be evaluated by each banking institution, separately and independently.
