Towards a “child’s basket” for toys ahead of the holidays after the “household basket” – Georgiadis Statement

by

Adonis Georgiadis: Within the week the changes for the holiday “household basket” – “There is a big difference in deposit and lending rates”

Close to agreement on the “kid’s basket”, that is one “toy basket” ahead of the holidays, the government is after the “household basket” as can be seen from statements by Adonis Georgiadis. At the same time, within the week the final announcements will be made for the “household basket” which will be valid for the holiday season.

Specially, as the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis explained to ANT1, “I am concerned with the issue, as a father and as a politician, that there is an opportunity for all children to have their toys. There are issues and competition to look at. We are close to an agreement, there is also a mood from the stores for this. As there is a “basket” in supermarkets, there will be a “basket” for toys.

The minister also said that the “household basket” has gained acceptance, as according to IELKA at least 4 out of 10 consumers buy products from it, although at first it was met with skepticism.

Regarding the festive “household basket”, Mr. Georgiadis said that “during the holidays there is a difference in the consumption habits associated with the festive table, as the basket follows the consumption habits. Its purpose is to serve consumers, who by preferring the basket put pressure on the chains and the competition so that the prices fall. We don’t want the basket to overflow too much, because then two problems will be created: we want to control from week to week to pressure the supermarkets to reduce prices and secondly if there are many products, the chains will not be able to do reduced prices for everything”.

“The ‘basket’ cannot ‘beat’ inflation.” The purpose of the basket is to make the cost for the festive table, which in any case will be higher than last year, be lower than it was for buying the same products a month ago,” said Adonis Georgiadis.

Regarding firewood, he said that due to the problems caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine, countries that are Europe’s main supplier of wood, there is an increase in prices, but this is restrained, as he explained, due to the measures taken by the Government to ban exports , so that there is sufficiency in Greece and therefore a greater supply and secondly a limitation has been imposed on the profit margin.

Asked about the ceiling on Russian oil, the minister said that “President Putin has decided, through blackmailing inflation, to force the governments of Europe to do Russia’s favor. This is the meaning of the war we are living. The decision to impose a ceiling on Russian oil at 60 euros per barrel is very complex. It’s not a small amount.”

“There is a big difference in interest rates on deposits and loans”

Regarding bank interest rates and government pressure for measures in favor of their customers, Mr. Georgiadis said that “every crisis has side effects. The war brings inflation and to curb it, the banks made money more expensive, so that we would consume less, put pressure on the market and reduce inflation.”

“Is there a European government that can legislatively intervene on interest rates?”, he asked, while noting that “a solution must be found for the vulnerable. There are people who have always been consistent with their loans, and now their loans are at risk of going red. A specific solution must be found for the vulnerable, not for everyone,” said Mr. Georgiadis.

He went on to say “we have seen what it means to fail the banking system, I don’t want to go through it again. There is a big difference in interest rates on deposits and loans. It will be a mistake for banks to continue their tactics with deposit rates, because many depositors will consider taking their money from Greek banks.”

Regarding banking supplies, he said that “the Ministry of Finance has given the banks a list of banking services and fees. We have seen what is happening in other countries. Greece was more expensive in some services, but not in all. The government has requested a counter-proposal, a meeting will be held and we will see the answers”.

Ark of the World: “Bad line of defense to curse government – church”

Finally, when asked about the “Ark of the World” and Father Antonio’s attack on the government, Mr. Georgiadis replied: “I always respect the presumption of innocence. Father Antonios will be called by the Justice to give answers. I am sorry for his lawyer’s statement, the government has nothing to do with the complaints made by some children. Complaints must be investigated. The change of management was done absolutely correctly, to restore confidence in the management of the structure. Can you imagine if the structure was controlled and the administration was the same?”

“It’s a bad line of defense to curse the government and the church. If someone is innocent, he makes sure to defend his innocence” noted Mr. Georgiadis.
