Shuttle: Brazil maintains growth in protein production in 2023

by

Brazil should obtain continuity in the growth of protein production next year. China will have slow growth and the United States and Europe will contract.

This is what an overview of Rabobank, a bank specializing in agribusiness, shows for the protein sector in 2023. In Brazil, exports will continue to support production.

Global growth in 2023 will be modest, with high costs and a quest to adapt to new consumption habits. Industries will have to adapt not only to the cyclical changes, but also to the structural changes that are to come.

It will be a new year of challenges, but also of opportunities for the sector, according to protein analysts at the bank.

Sustainable production and disease management, mainly avian influenza and African swine fever that currently affect herds, will be in the attention of producers.

Cost pressure will favor industries that bring cost-effective proteins to market. Producers and processors must be efficient and agile. Exchange rate movements should favor exporters, according to Rabobank analysts.

The aquaculture sector, as it depends less on commodities, may have a greater global evolution, according to the bank.

With regard to this year’s foreign trade data for Brazil, beef exports in November dropped in relation to the pace they had been registering in recent months, when they exceeded 200,000 tons and reached US$ 1 billion per month.

Last month, according to Abrafrigo (Brazilian Association of Refrigerators), revenues totaled US$ 873 million, from 174 thousand tons.

In the accumulated result for the year, Brazilian foreign sales of beef reached 2.16 million tons, 26% more than in the same period last year, shows Abrafrigo. Revenues rose to $12.2 billion in the period, up 44%.

Pork exports, on the other hand, recovered in November, with an increase of 35% in revenues for the month, compared to the same period of the previous year.

The reduction in imports from China, however, causes this year’s accumulated to be below that of 2021.

According to ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein), pork exports from January to November totaled US$ 2.32 billion, 5% less than in 2021. 3%.

Chicken meat exports exceed US$ 8 billion in the year, 29% more than those from January to November 2021, according to data from Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade). The volume reaches 4 million tons.
