Before the official announcement as Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad said this Friday (9) that he will start assembling his team, but that he will not announce the first names today.
The statement comes before Haddad’s official announcement at the head of the portfolio, which should take place soon, during a press conference called by President Luiz Inácio Lula a Silva (PT) to journalists at the CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil),
Upon leaving the hotel where Lula is staying in the capital, Haddad spoke briefly to journalists. He also said that he will spend the weekend in São Paulo.
The former Minister of Education’s answers were monosyllabic. “I will,” Haddad said, when asked if he was going to start assembling his team. “No,” he replied when asked if he would announce any other names later on Friday.
The former Minister of Education had been the strongest name for the portfolio for weeks, and his nomination was expected.
There is an expectation that the government should nominate names with a liberal bent for the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Services.
Within the PT, what is said is that if Persio Arida accepts, he can be the head of Planning. Arida, however, told Sheet who has no intention of taking office in Brasilia.
On Thursday (8), Haddad met with Minister Paulo Guedes (Economy) at the ministry’s headquarters and defined a work agenda to have a broader view of the situation of the Ministry of Economy.
As of next Tuesday (13), the PT member foresees meetings with the Secretariats of the National Treasury, of the Federal Revenue Service, among others, to see what situation the new government will find at the beginning of the mandate.
At the time, he said he had met with Guedes as a member of the government transition economy working group, not as a ministerial member, when he was asked whether the meeting had been requested by Lula.
The president-elect is yet to be announced this Friday.
Senator-elect Flávio Dino (PSB) will go to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security; the governor of Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), for the Civil House; diplomat Mauro Vieira for Itamaraty; former Minister of Defense José Múcio Monteiro for Defense; and former finance minister Fernando Haddad.
