Opinion – Surf’s Up: Hawaiian winter is here!

by

The end of the year is always eagerly awaited by Hawaiian surfers and surfers from all over the world. December is the period when big swells hit the Hawaiian archipelago making everything very agitated. In addition to the big swells, three things are at stake. The last chance to qualify for the world championship in 2023, the much coveted Hawaiian Triple Crown and the start of the world championship.

All this happens and is concentrated in 11 km of extension on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, there are the three Hawaiian jewels – Haleiwa, Pipeline and Sunset. These waves form the Hawaiian Triple Crown where the surfer who scores the most points in these three stages enters a select and highly disputed group of TRIPLE CROWN champions.

The first dispute took place in Haleiwa and was won by the Hawaiian John John Florence who, after an injury in the middle of the year, showed to be recovered and won the stage. Haleiwa, in addition to being the first stage of the Triple Crown, was also the last chance to qualify for the world’s surfing elite in 2023. This stage is considered a stage of the Challenger Series, a kind of series B where the best classifieds of the year stamped their passport for the world’s surfing elite in 2023.

The good news is that the Brazilians João Chianca and Michel Rodrigues qualified and will be part of the world tour in 2023.

The Brazilian team will have 11 athletes in 2023. For men – Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Ítalo Ferreira, brothers Miguel Pupo and Samuel Pupo, Caio Ibelli, Jadson André, Yago Dora, João Chianca and Michel Rodrigues. In the females – our representative Tatiana Weston-Webb will be the only representative in 2023, but wait, a very talented generation of girls is coming and soon she will have company.

The beginning of the year will be intense with the Triple Crown sequence and the start of the surfing world championship. It’s worth following this big wave surfing show with brilliant surfers and all the atmosphere of a place where many say surfing was born, well that’s a story for another text.
