The Commission found that the Greek measure is in line with EU rules on state aid

The European Commission has found that a €20 million Greek measure to aid the operator of Athens International Airport is in line with EU state aid rules.

The measure is intended to compensate the airport operator for the damages it suffered during the period from July 1 to December 31, 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the travel restrictions imposed by Greece and other countries to limit the spread of the virus. As a result, Athens International Airport experienced a sharp decline in traffic and profitability during this period. The aid will take the form of a direct grant.

The Commission assessed the measure in accordance with Article 107 para.2 f.b of the TFEU, which allows the Commission to approve state aid measures granted by Member States to compensate specific companies or sectors for damage directly caused by extraordinary events , such as the coronavirus outbreak. The Commission found that the Greek measure would compensate for damage directly linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

It also found that the measure is proportionate, as the compensation does not go beyond what is necessary to repair the damage. The Commission therefore concluded that the compensation measure is in line with EU State aid rules.
