The aim, as sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs point out, was to reach an agreement to impose a “realistic ceiling” on natural gas supplies by the EU member states

Preparatory contacts and intensive negotiations on the imposition of a ceiling on the import price of natural gas took place throughout the night at the initiative of the Minister of Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas, in view of today’s crucial meeting of the Council of Ministers in Brussels.

The goal, as sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs point out, was to reach an agreement to impose a “realistic ceiling” in natural gas supplies, from the EU member states, as the Commission’s previous proposal of 275 euros was characterized as “unrealistic”. It is recalled that the effort to create a majority of member states with this request was initiated by Greece and three other countries.

The background

In particular, yesterday Mr. Skrekas organized a dinner with the participation of five of his counterparts who belong to the European People’s Party and the subject of discussion was the Agreement on the realistic ceiling. He then invited 12 of his counterparts (including countries that support the €150-200 cap proposal) and in a discussion that lasted until the early hours of the morning presented three points on the cap, which were adopted by those present, to be supported in today’s meeting of the Council of Ministers.

In the morning the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy repeated the meeting, this time with the participation of the Energy Ministers of France, Germany and the Netherlands, where they discussed the decisions made by the “12” at night in relation to the views of these three countries.

This meeting was concluded shortly before the official work of the Council of Ministers began (after 12 noon Greek time) where Mr. Skrekas made the main presentation.

“Extended Discussion”

“Never before in similar meetings of Ministers of Energy there has not been such an extensive discussion before the start of the Council of Ministers of Energy, the work of which is in progress”, said the same sources characteristically.

As Reuters reports, EU energy ministers are meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to try to agree a bloc-wide gas price cap after months of deadlock over whether the measure could ease Europe’s energy crisis. . The Czech Presidency proposes 200 euros per megawatt hour.
