The Malwee group has committed to a 58% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain by the end of the next decade, according to the environmental goals plan it presented at the last world conference on climate change, held in November.
With headquarters in Santa Catarina and three industrial units, the textile group reduced emissions from its factories by 75% by changing a boiler and making other changes in recent years, going beyond the 50% target established by the commitment signed with the Organization of Nations United.
To reach the goal established for the supply chain, the textile group bets on cotton producers with sustainable practices, which use less fertilizer and less pesticides in planting, and on the use of recycled synthetic fabric fibers in their production.
So far, 31 Brazilian companies have signed similar commitments with the UN, submitting their plans for validation by a group that brings together non-governmental organizations, scientists and companies. In addition to Malwee, four others have already received the approval: Baluarte, EDP, Klabin and Sabará.
Malwee intends to achieve its goals without resorting to carbon offsetting projects, but is studying investments in this area as well. “We want quality projects, which involve environmental recovery”, says TaÃse Beduschi, the group’s sustainability manager.
