Opinion – Panel SA: Appointment at BNDES makes choice difficult for Industry, say businessmen

by

Industrialists and sector executives predict that the Lula government will have to resort to a symbolic name to head the Ministry of Industry (MDIC).

The assessment is that there may be two reasons for the difficulty in finding someone of weight to accept the position: either the new government does not know how to look or the portfolio is not attractive.

Mercadante’s appointment to the BNDES before defining the minister is seen as an inversion of order that weakened the portfolio before the bank.

After the news that Josué Gomes, president of Fiesp, and Pedro Wongtschowski (Ultra Group) rejected invitations to take over the post, businessmen and senior executives in the sector say that it is time to clarify what the new government intends with this ministry of industry .

In the words of a senior executive of a multinational, the worst nightmare would be to recreate a ministry without resources or ambition, just to say that it exists. He claims that there was an impression, which needs to be corrected in time, that the new MDIC will not have priority.

Some suggest looking for younger names rather than turning to industry veterans with job restrictions. The assessment is that there are other professionals with requirements such as a global vision of competitiveness and the challenges of technology and innovation to understand the future of industry and renewable sources.
