Luiz Marinho returns to the Ministry of Labor after 16 years

by

Former president of the ABC Metalworkers Union and former mayor of São Bernardo do Campo, elected federal deputy Luiz Marinho (PT-SP) was confirmed this Thursday (22) to head the Ministry of Labor. The choice of Marinho’s name for the folder had been anticipated by the Sheet and it was confirmed this Thursday (22) by president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who announced 16 new ministers.

Marinho held the post between 2005 and 2007, when he became Minister of Social Security. In 2008, he left office to run for mayor of São Bernardo do Campo, a city he commanded for two terms.

Graduated in law, Marinho was a metallurgist in the 1970s, when he met President Lula. In 1996, he was elected president of the ABC Metallurgists Union, a position for which he was re-elected twice more (1999-2002 and 2002-2003).

In 2002, he was a candidate for vice-governor of the state of São Paulo on the ticket headed by José Genoino (PT), when the vice-president of the elected ticket, Geraldo Alckmin, won the dispute in the second round.

Marinho’s choice represents a victory for PT and trade unionists over the PCdoB, which sought the ministry alongside Lula. The party had expressed interest in three ministries: Science and Technology, Culture and Labor. Finally, the party was left with only the first, with the nomination of Luciana Santos, vice-governor of Pernambuco and president of the PCdoB.

At the head of the portfolio, the future Minister of Labor will have as one of the goals to make the S System (Senai, Sesc, Sesi, Sebrae, among others) align its performance with a national plan for training workers.

The idea is to integrate technical schools, universities and entities of the S System in a unified strategy for professional training, associated with the national objectives of economic development defined by the federal government.

Lula announced this Thursday 16 ministers who will compose his government from January 2023 and presented the first women at the highest level of the next administration.

In all, there will be 37 folders in his government. Thus, there are 16 more posts to be filled by indication of the future Chief Executive. The difficulty in party nominations has stopped some nominations.

The disclosure of the Lula government’s strategic names was made at the CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil), the location chosen as the headquarters of the transition, in Brasília, one day after the approval of the PEC (Proposed Constitutional Amendment) of Gastança.
