Panel SA: Supermarkets expect a 2% increase in Christmas sales despite higher prices

by

The Apas (Associação Paulista dos Supermercados) foresees a growth of 2% in sales, in real terms, this Christmas.

If confirmed, the result will be a reversal of the performance of retailers’ Christmas sales last year, which suffered a 9.5% drop, when the pandemic restrictions still caused a retraction in consumption.

According to Apas, sales volume should improve this Christmas, despite the rise in prices, which made most of the traditional products for the holidays more expensive.

The association estimates an increase of between 8% and 9% in the cost of the Christmas basket.

Among the items that recorded the biggest jumps are baked goods, such as panettone, in addition to chocolates and non-alcoholic beverages.
