Two Greeks and a foreigner were arrested in the area of ​​Acharna – Accusations, among others, of forming and joining a criminal organization

In particular, two Greeks, 30 and 25 years old, and a 19-year-old foreigner were arrested, as part of a police operation, on Wednesday (21/12) in the area of ​​Acharna, for forming and joining a criminal organization, distinguished cases of vehicle theft by complicity, construction and possession explosives and incendiary materials and violation of arms and alien laws.

From the preliminary investigation so far, 5 thefts of two-wheelers have been solved, while the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full extent of their criminal activity. According to ELAS, gang members have been arrested in the past for similar crimes.

According to the police, as part of the investigation into cases of motorcycle theft, a special police team was set up and found the defendants on Wednesday morning in the Acharni area loading two stolen motorcycles onto a trailer. The police stopped them and took them to the headquarters of the Sub-Directorate for the Prosecution of Crimes against Life and Property, where they were arrested.

As emerged from the investigation, the defendants, at least since April 2021, had formed and joined an operationally structured gang with a methodical plan of action and distinct roles among its members.

Particularly, the 30-year-old, as the owner of a motorcycle repair business, received damaged motorcycles from customers in order to repair them, while the other members of the gang undertook to remove motorcycles of the same model and make. Then the stolen machines, on which they had replaced their license plates, were taken to the shop or the 30-year-old’s home for dismantling. The spare parts from the stolen motorcycles were used in the machines to be repaired, which were then handed over to their owners.

Additionally, the defendants falsified the chassis and engine numbers of the stolen machines and sold them as legitimate, making an illegal financial gain.

After searches of the gang members’ houses, shop and their possessions, a total of 4 motorcycles, 17 engines and a vehicle control unit, a number of tools for falsifying chassis and engine numbers, a hand grenade, a quantity of explosives, detonating ropes were found and confiscated and detonators, 6-round air revolver, war rifle cartridges and magazine, rifle scope and bayonet, naval flare, number of cell phones and SIM cards, number of vehicle keys and notebook with handwritten notes regarding amounts of money and vehicle parts.

Those arrested were taken to the Athens District Attorney.
