Aristotle Divanis, founder of the Divani hotel group, passed away today at the age of 94. His funeral will take place at the First Cemetery of Athens next Wednesday, January 4 at 2:00 p.m.
The beginning of creation in Thessaly
Aristotelis Divanis took the first step in the hotel sector in 1958, in his hometown, Trikala. The founder of the Group’s venture was innovative from the start with each of the unit’s 65 rooms having its own bathroom.
The love for hospitality and the entrepreneurial spirit of Mr. Aristotelis Divanis showed the way for the continuation as well, with him withdrawing from any other commercial activity and focusing exclusively on the hotel industry.
With his first business initiative in the field of Tourism being crowned with complete success, Mr. Aristotelis Divanis sees the rising development of the iconic destination of Meteora and takes the big decision to establish the Group’s second hotel in Kalambaka.
After the end of the dictatorship, the Group is now the largest in Thessaly opening its third unit, this time in the city of Larissa.
Protagonist in Athens as well
The next step seemed predetermined. Shortly before completing the second decade in the hotel industry, the founder of the Group, in collaboration with his fellow countryman Mr. Zafolia, opens his first hotel in Athens in the Acropolis area.
Mr. Aristotelis Divanis strategically chooses the most popular spot in the country and globally recognizable to identify it with his first hotel in the capital.
The descent to Athens was successful and a catalyst for the subsequent course.
The third decade of the Divani Group brings another hotel to Athens, Divani Zafolia Alexandras, a historic building in a changing Athens.
Next stop is Corfu
The Ionian island was then one of the most popular tourist destinations for the British public, which had begun to increase significantly year on year. Mr. Aristotelis Divanis foresees the increase in the tourist flow and enters the 1980s strongly by acquiring Corfu Kanoni. Thus, the luxurious Divani Corfu Palace is “born” and turns into a unique resort for the region.
The consolidation of the Group in the Capital
1986 is the year Spyros Divanis, son of Aristotle, begins to be active in the Group’s businesses after completing his postgraduate studies. The experience of the founder combined with the dynamics and innovative ideas of the new generation lead the Group to the next steps.
Although this is a difficult period for Greek tourism, the Group is dynamically repositioning itself in the Athens market and winning the bet by acquiring the historic Caravel Hotel. Within three years Divani Caravel becomes the first profitable hotel business and is the first choice for holding international and domestic demanding events and conferences in the following decades.
At the same time, on its 40th anniversary, the Group dares to make another important investment by acquiring the iconic landmark of the Southern Suburbs, Apollon Pallas, in Vouliagmeni. A strategic move and investment that earned him recognition locally and internationally, with the market recognizing his leadership.
