Amazon to lay off more than 17,000 workers: report

by

Amazon plans to lay off more than 17,000 employees, more than the e-commerce giant initially planned, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Seattle-based company began laying off employees in its devices division in November. A source told Reuters at the time that Amazon was targeting 10,000 job cuts.

Amazon, the second-largest private employer in the United States with more than 1.5 million workers, including warehouse workers, has been bracing for likely slower growth as rising inflation forces businesses and consumers to cut spending.

The additional job cuts at Amazon would push the total layoffs to be higher than those recently announced by other major companies and represent a quick turnaround for the retailer, which in previous months has doubled its base salary cap to compete more aggressively for employees.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Cloud-based software company Salesforce said on Wednesday it plans to cut jobs by 10%, while technology companies from Meta to Microsoft laid off thousands to prepare for a recession.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is cutting more than 11,000 jobs this year.
