Magazine Luiza, one of the largest retail chains of furniture and electronics in the country, is holding its “fantastic sale” this Friday (6th) to empty end-of-year stocks.
The two best-selling products in this year’s edition, however, have a very modest average ticket: Ortobom’s R$10 pillow and Erilar’s R$25 pressure cooker. In last year’s “fantastic sale” edition, the products were the same, with a slight price variation: pillow at R$ 10 and pressure cooker at R$ 20.
The third best-selling product both this year and last year was the air fryer. The 2023 hit was a 2.4-liter Nell model, for R$239.
According to Magalu, until 5:30 pm this Friday, around 315,000 Ortobom pillows, 150,000 Erilar pressure cookers and 21,000 Nell electric fryers had been sold.
Considering the air fryer category as a whole, there were around 34,000 units – the same amount of sales of TVs in this year’s sale, taking all brands into account.
Among the best-selling categories this year are fans (over 60,000 units) and blenders (over 55,000). They are cheaper products than those that occupied the fourth and fifth positions in sales last year: the Brastemp 12 kg washing machine and the TCL 50-inch 4k smart TV, respectively.
The lowest value of this year’s average ticket, in one of the most traditional January sales in the country (the Magalu promotion is in its 30th edition), may already be an indication of how much Brazilians are afraid of contracting new debts. Proof of this were the “warm” seasons of Black Friday and Christmas at the end of 2022.
According to the retailer, the physical stores sold, in the first three hours of the promotion, 20% more than in the “fantastic sale” of last year.
“It was a fantastic sale better than we even expected,” he told Sheet Luiz Rego, Magalu’s commercial executive director. “We had high double-digit growth, adding all channels,” he said.
According to him, the company prepared itself, because it knows that customers trust the liquidation. “They save money all year round to buy consumer dreams like a TV and a washing machine, and they still take the opportunity to take opportunities, like pillows and pots.”
