Upon his arrival in Davos at the beginning of this Monday (16), the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said that there are three messages — political, economic and environmental — to be passed on in the intense agenda that he will fulfill in the next two days in annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.
“A political message is the democratic question, Brazil’s commitment to support the democratic days that the world is experiencing, especially in South America, but reinforcing the commitment to combating all types of extremism that have been giving the tone in the last period.”
The second point highlighted by the minister upon arriving at the Sunstar hotel is the economy: “The economic issue is the resumption of growth with fiscal and environmental sustainability and social justice, the economic model that we are defending.”
Haddad recalled that he is in Davos alongside his colleague Marina Silva, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. “Environmental sustainability has gained a dimension in which Brazil has a lot to offer, not only in terms of resuming historic commitments, such as combating deforestation, renewable energy, but also in terms of development.”
In his view, it is possible “to think about the agenda for the reindustrialization of Brazil, based on sustainability”.
As for the natural interest of the international community gathered in Switzerland this week for the consequences of the attacks on Brazilian democracy, Haddad reinforced the promptness of the response of the constituted Powers.
“The Brazilian institutions gave a very immediate response”, said the minister, listing the fact that the following day there was an intervention in the security of the Federal District, with the judicial removal of the governor of the DF, Ibaneis Rocha, in addition to the visit of the 27 governors to Brasilia, who met with the Three Powers of the Republic.
“It’s a gesture of commitment to the Constitution and the democratic agenda. This gave a very quick response. In 24 hours, things were under control.”
Haddad also highlighted the popular repudiation, recorded by a Datafolha survey that indicated that 93% of people are against the attacks. “It is not a trivial thing. It is a clear demonstration that Brazil is committed to the electoral result, to democratic rules, to freedom, to individual freedoms, respecting constitutional guarantees.”
According to the minister, it is a demonstration of great institutional maturity given right at the inauguration of President Lula’s mandate. “In my opinion, this should be met with the same degree of surprise as was the gesture of the defeated in doing so in a totally inexcusable way.”
For Haddad, this type of opposition outside the democratic rites should not bar the economic project.
“It is challenging, but we started to respond very well. We know that it may not have stopped there. These extremist groups continue to be mobilized, communicating based on fake news, they continue to sow terror, but I believe that the very way President Lula has been behaving and the receptivity he has been having in Congress and in the Judiciary is proof that we are on the right path.”
Likewise, the minister assesses that the market, especially entrepreneurs and investors, should adjust expectations. “Anxiety will naturally be controlled with the measures that will be taken and will go in the direction of what President Lula announced in the campaign.”
