Skrekas: We are promoting the Green Transition, we are implementing major infrastructure projects

Two more waste treatment units were auctioned, in the Eastern Sector of Thessaloniki and Larissa, with a total budget of 182 million euros – A total of 28 units have been auctioned in the last three years

Two more new waste management units were auctioned at the end of 2022, bringing the total number of waste treatment units that have been auctioned in our country in the last three years to 28 units.

Specifically, the waste treatment units of the Eastern Sector of Thessaloniki and Larissa were auctioned, with a total cost of more than 182 million euros. The financing of the construction of both projects is provided by the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructures, Environment and Sustainable Development 2014-2020”.

As regards the MEA Eastern Sector of the Central Macedonia Region, the total budget of the project amounts to €114,434,070.88 including VAT. The unit will be built in the location “Agios Antonios of the Municipality of Thermi of P.E. Thessaloniki and will have a processing capacity of 128,000 tn of mixed waste per year and 22,000 tn of pre-selected organics per year.

As far as the MEA of Larisa is concerned, its total budget amounts to 67,730,320.80 euros including VAT and it will be built in D.E. Makrychorio of the Municipality of Tempe. The MEA facilities will receive and mechanically and biologically treat 61,479 tn/year of mixed waste and 12,600 tn/year of pre-selected organic waste.

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Kostas Skrekas, said: “With the new tenders for the units of the Eastern Sector of Thessaloniki and Larissa, we continue with determination the implementation of major infrastructure projects, related to the processing of solid waste in our country. We are getting closer and closer to our big ambitious goal, which is to complete all the auctions of waste processing units necessary for Greece by 2023. In this way, we remain true to our commitment to a smooth Green Transition, while improving the quality of life of all Greek citizens.”

The General Secretary of the Coordination of Waste Management, Manolis Grafakos, said: “Two more large waste treatment units were auctioned, bringing the number of units auctioned under the Government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to 28. Within three years, significant progress has been made to create the necessary infrastructure that the our country to manage its waste in a modern way that respects the environment and follows the principles of the circular economy. We are continuing our efforts, so that within the next six months all the necessary infrastructure will be auctioned.”
