Panel SA: After the Yanomami crisis, mining municipalities ask for increased inspection

by

Amig (which brings together mining municipalities from Minas Gerais and other parts of the country) prepared a request to the government for the strengthening of the ANM (National Mining Agency). The organization defends that it is necessary to increase inspection of the sector to fight tragedies like the one that is happening in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.

The association says that “it has been hitting the same key” and that “this is the only way to put an end to the barbarities provoked by clandestine operations”.

Still according to Amig, “the presence of illegal miners has been a constant, however, in the last four years, the irregularity found room to grow even more, with the weakening of the support bodies for the indigenous people and the fight against environmental crimes in the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro”.

The association claims that it sent Lula and the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, in early January, a letter demanding some measures to make the sector’s activity sustainable. One of the requests is the allocation of 7% of CFEM revenue (Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploitation) to the agency.
