Toys R Us this week reopened a store in the United States, in East Rutherford, in the state of New Jersey.
The traditional toy business maintains 900 stores in 25 other countries, but had closed all units in its home nation after filing for bankruptcy in 2017, affected by consumers’ transition to online shopping and large retailers.
After that, the company was bought by the WHP Global group, which already tried to revive the physical Toys R Us trade in the US in 2019, with two stores, which closed earlier this year due to the Covid-19 crisis.
The new store is located in a mall and has 10,000 toys spread over 1,858 square meters, far more than the 604 square meters of the units that were closed in early 2021.
WHP Global announced in August that it plans to open 400 Toys ‘R’ Us units inside Macy’s stores, which it has partnered with. According to a press release, these new openings are scheduled for 2022.
“Our US expansion plans are fast-paced, which propels us into the next chapter of growing our global brand,” WHP Global Chief Executive Yehuda Shmidman said in the statement.
