Opinion – Maria Inês Dolci: Brazilian consumer wants to forget 2021

by

This year, which is coming to an end, was very negative for the Brazilian consumer. And everything could get worse, if PL 2766/2021 is approved, a setback that reduces the autonomy of the Procons. The bill establishes, for example, that the fines are replaced by investments in infrastructure, services and projects by the supplier that violated the CDC (Consumer Defense Code).

This weakening of the CDC and public and private consumer protection agencies adds to inflation above 10% a year, the dollar in the clouds and high unemployment (12.1%), while income shrinks, and experts project a negligible growth of 0.42% for the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2022.

At the end of this year’s lights, passengers have suffered the consequences of incompetence and lack of respect for their rights. I am referring to the mess caused by Ita Transportes Aéreos, a company authorized to operate with low share capital, controlled by the Itapemirim Group, which is under judicial reorganization.

More than 130 thousand passengers are projected to have been affected, considering round-trip flights, between December 17th and February 17th. That is, a period that includes Christmas, New Year’s Eve and summer holidays. Regrettable, ANAC (National Civil Aviation Agency)!

In addition, increases in the prices of fuel, cooking gas, electricity and basic food basket products marked 2021. As I wrote in this space, there was even an embarrassing classification of first- and second-rate bones, one of the hallmarks of the population’s impoverishment.

The LGPD (General Law for the Protection of Personal Data) is in force, but even so there were worrying mega-leakages, such as last July, exposing sensitive data on the Internet – RG ; CPF and CNH (National Driver’s License). For the first time, digital hackers managed to leak the names of users’ mothers, valuable data for validating online services.

Another negative event for household consumption was the resumption of increases in the economy’s basic interest rate, the Selic, to try to stop the escalation of inflation. Since March, we have gone from a rate of 2% (historically the lowest) to 9.25%. This makes consumer credit more expensive. Sales drop and, consequently, it will be even more difficult to reactivate the Brazilian economy.

Despite all this, I wish you all a happy 2022, with great health and hope, as we have a country to rebuild!
