Security forces in the Dominican Republic detected a boat carrying 650 packages of cocaine yesterday during an operation amid the US military deployment in the Caribbean region, local authorities said.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that no more drug trafficking by sea in the Caribbeanafter ordering warships and fighter jets to deploy to the area in August. “Drug ships don’t come anymore,” he assured.

The US has carried out airstrikes in the Caribbean and the Pacific against ships it believes belong to drug cartels. Overall, the US government spoke of 15 attacks of which 62 people were killed. He did not, however, present any evidence of the connection of these people to the drug trade.

The ship detected by the Dominican Republic and “coming from South America” ​​was searched in Baththe National Narcotics Control Directorate (DNCD) reported, without specifying its exact origin, nor the quantity of cocaine. Two citizens of the Dominican Republic were arrested.

DNCD emphasized that “the blow it inflicted on criminal structures” reaffirms its commitment not to allow “national and international networks” to use the territorial waters of the country for their smuggling.
