Greece had the biggest recovery in air passenger traffic in the EU, the tourism minister said

Optimistic are the forecasts for the levels that will move tourismaccording to the responsible minister Vassilis Kikilia who pointed out that “Greece had the biggest recovery in air passenger traffic in the EU”.

In an interview he gave to the “Parapolitika” radio station, he noted that the messages for this season are very auspicious, which is explained by the excellent tourist season that preceded it. It is indicative that Greece recorded the biggest recovery in the European Union with only -1.9% in air passenger traffic compared to 2019, and while the European average is at -21%.

At the same time, increase in passenger traffic abroad in January in “El. Venizelos” by 5% compared to the “cloudy” 2019 proves that the strategy for city breaks and for tourism even in the off season months is bearing fruit.

“In January, we handled 1.44 million passengers at the “Eleftherios Venizelos” airport in total, and among passengers from abroad, a 5% increase compared to ’19. So from very early on it shows how 2023 will go. Also, last December the occupancy rates of Athens hotels had an 8% increase compared to 2019. If one also looks at how the prices have evolved since 2019, one understands what the profits were for the Greek economy, for the hoteliers, for our restaurants and taverns, the shops around the Acropolis, for the night life of the city, etc” said the Minister of Tourism.

He also underlined that the image from the reservations for the coming season it is incredibly good, stating: “2023 will be a very strong year for tourism and will have strong income for the average Greek family and the small and medium-sized Greek business, for the primary sector, for the commercial world , for the constructions and for the hundreds of thousands of workers”.

Finally, regarding the EOT campaigns for 2023, Mr. Kikilias pointed out that the focus will be on sustainable tourismnature, environmental protection and the unique travel experience that Greece offers, noting that now 1 in 2 travelers worldwide chooses to travel to a destination that focuses on sustainability and green development.
