São Paulo’s inflation is the highest of the capitals; see list

The metropolitan region of São Paulo accumulated inflation of 6.67% in the 12 months through January, according to the IPCA (Extended National Consumer Price Index).

It is the highest increase of the 16 capitals and metropolitan regions surveyed by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), according to data released this Thursday (9).

According to the IBGE, the food and beverage group exerted the greatest influence on inflation in São Paulo.

The segment had an impact of 2.26 percentage points on the local IPCA. The increase in food and beverage prices was 11.47% up to January, second only to clothing (17.88%).

The IPCA decelerated over the second half of 2022 in São Paulo, reaching 6.61% in the 12 months ended in December. However, there was a slight acceleration at the start of 2023.

Until December, Rio de Janeiro had the highest inflation of the capitals and metropolitan regions. The advance was 6.65%.

Rio’s rate slowed to 6.47% in January. With that, it was below those verified in São Paulo (6.67%) and Salvador (6.53%).

In the country, the IPCA accumulated a rise of 5.77% in the 12 months through January. Five metropolises had inflation above this level.

In addition to São Paulo (6.67%), Salvador (6.53%) and Rio de Janeiro (6.47%), Brasília (6.08%) and Fortaleza (5.90%) are also in this group.

The remaining 11 metropolises surveyed registered an IPCA lower than that of Brazil. Goiânia (4.24%), Porto Alegre (4.40%) and Belo Horizonte (4.66%) had the lowest figures accumulated up to January.
